Professor: We often imagine a memory as a document stored unchanged in the brain and opened whenever we need it. Research on reconsolidation suggests a more dynamic process. After a new memory first becomes stable, recalling it can briefly make it flexible again. During this window, new information, emotion, or context may become connected to the old memory before it is stored once more. Consider a typical laboratory study. Researchers first teach participants to associate a particular image with an unpleasant sound. On a later day, they show the image briefly, which reactivates the fearful memory. While that memory is flexible, the participants repeatedly see the image without hearing the sound. If the timing is right, the original association may become less fearful even after some time has passed. This differs from ordinary extinction training, which may create a competing safe memory without changing the earlier association as directly. However, we should not conclude that memories can be edited with perfect control. The flexible period is limited, timing is crucial, and very strong or frequently rehearsed memories may resist change. Researchers also disagree about how consistently laboratory results apply to complex real experiences. Even with those limits, reconsolidation helps explain why remembering is not simply retrieval; it is also an act of reconstruction.
